Welcome to Oaktree Academy
Oaktree Academy is a unique private Christian school that began in 1994. Having grown in numbers and excellence over the years, the school is now a concrete expression of a new educational model in which two proven elements of educational success…the professional instruction of a classroom teacher and the one-on-one instruction and/or guidance of each student’s parents…are combined in a single, unified, college prep program known as University Model School®.
Oaktree Academy truly partners with parents to affirm their role as the primary influencers in their children's lives. This model of education allows families to have a less hectic lifestyle, a great sense of community, and provides families with much needed time together. University model education takes the best aspects of traditional public and private schools, as well as home schools, and molds them into one model. Oaktree Academy’s goal is to partner with parents to develop children who are morally and academically prepared to reach their maximum potential and uses a unique schedule adapted to the elementary, junior, and senior high levels. Professional teachers teaching in their areas of expertise conduct central classroom instruction, taught from a biblical worldview. Elementary students, kindergarten-third grade, attend classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Fourth-sixth grade students attend classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings. Our junior high and high school students attend classes four mornings a week, Monday-Thursday. Students spend non-class days and afternoons at home in their “satellite classroom” where parents continue their instruction or monitor student progress. Teachers provide parents with detailed lesson plans and instructions for time spent at home. Communication is also enhanced through the use of specialized software, called RENWEB, which connects parents, teachers and school administration via the Internet. This model requires a strong student work ethic and emphasizes low teacher/student ratios. University Model Schools® have been proven to be one of the best preparations for students planning on attending college, at a cost far less than traditional private school.
Though off-campus parental roles are clearly defined and required in the model, UMS should not be equated withhome schooling or home schooling cooperatives. Nor should UMS be understood as traditional classroom education that has simply reduced classroom time. Its significance lies in its ability to effectively partner parents with highly qualified teachers to gain solid academic results while also strengthening a foundation of Christian discipleship in the home and at school.
Oaktree Academy is fully certified by NAUMS (National Association of University Model Schools) as a University Model School and is fully accredited by AdvancED (CITA:Commission on International &Trans-Regional Accreditation and SACS :Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). Oaktree Academy is also a member of the Hampton Roads Association of Christian Schools. Full-time and part-time students who successfully complete all the Academy’s requirements will be issued an accredited diploma at graduation.
Oaktree students have consistently earned college credits while attending high school through the academy’s strong dual enrollment program at area colleges and have gone on to attend the colleges and universities of their choice.
In addition to a comprehensive elementary program and college preparatory education, Oaktree Academy also offers extra-curricular activities such as field trips, sports, clubs and fine arts. At Oaktree Academy, we are passionate about seeing students succeed not only in academics but also in character development and spiritual growth.
